Transform Your Health with Bariatric Surgery

At Veritas Specialist Centre, we are delighted that you are considering options to improve your health. Our weight loss surgery program is designed to help you achieve significant and sustainable weight loss, enhancing your overall well-being and life expectancy.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 1 in 3 Australian adults were classified as obese in 2017-18, a significant increase from 1 in 5 in 1995. Additionally, nearly 75% of men and 59% of women were overweight or obese. Obesity can result from various factors, including overeating, certain medications, stress, poor sleep, hormonal imbalances, and genetics.

We recognise that each patient is unique, and our health professionals work closely with you to identify and manipulate the factors that contribute to your obesity. Evidence shows that sustainable control of obesity can be achieved through a holistic lifestyle approach that addresses the multiple contributing factors.

We view bariatric surgery as an opportunity to break the cycle of obesity, but it is just one part of an overall treatment plan. Meaningful and sustainable weight loss also requires changes in behaviour and habits. Options for weight loss include diet and calorie restriction, meal replacement shakes, appetite suppressants, and bariatric surgery.

Medical Considerations for Bariatric Surgery

Our suitability assessment is based on international guidelines supported by long-term research on health outcomes. These guidelines, published by the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) and endorsed by the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic & Obesity Surgery Society, ensure safe and sustainable results for our patients.

Key medical considerations include a BMI greater than 35 or greater than 30 with associated health problems such, as diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure or fatty liver disease.

You may be a suitable candidate if you have tried other weight loss methods in the past, are not currently pregnant or planning pregnancy within the next 12 months, have no addiction to drugs, are a non-smoker, and are motivated and well-informed about the options and risks involved.

Traditionally, surgery is considered for those between the ages of 18 and 65 but there are some situations where surgery is offered outside of this age range.
