The Veritas Centre offers a Direct Access Endoscopy referral pathway, providing General Practitioners with a streamlined process for referring appropriate patients for gastroscopy and
colonoscopy.
For patients who meet the clinical criteria, this pathway may allow them to proceed directly to an endoscopic procedure without an initial specialist consultation. All referrals undergo clinical triage to determine the most appropriate management pathway.
Where a pre-procedure consultation is considered clinically necessary, this will be arranged prior to booking the procedure.
What is Direct Access Endoscopy?
Direct Access Endoscopy has been developed to improve access to gastrointestinal investigations while ensuring every patient receives appropriate clinical assessment.
By reducing unnecessary appointments for suitable patients, the pathway helps to streamline care, minimise delays and provide a more efficient patient experience. Each referral is individually assessed to determine whether Direct Access Endoscopy is
appropriate.

Referrals
Following receipt of your referral:
- The referral undergoes clinical triage.
- Additional clinical information may be requested if required.
- Patients suitable for Direct Access Endoscopy are contacted to commence the booking process.
- Patients requiring further assessment will be offered an appropriate consultation prior to any procedure.
This process ensures each patient receives the most appropriate care based on their individual
clinical circumstances.
To assist with timely triage, referrals should include where applicable:
- Presenting symptoms and clinical history
- Relevant examination findings
- Current medications (including anticoagulants and antiplatelet therapy)
- Relevant pathology results
- Imaging reports
- Previous endoscopy reports
- Significant medical history and co-morbidities
