The first time you do anything can be a little nerve-wracking and having your first weight loss surgery consultation session is no different. We understand it’s a big decision to take the first step in your weight loss journey.

Therefore, to help relieve any anxiety you may be having surrounding your first appointment at Perth Obesity Surgery, we have put together some key points on what to expect.

Here’s what to expect from your first appointment:

Paperwork

As with any healthcare service, a certain amount of paperwork is required to get started. This will consist of basic questions regarding your personal details, such as name, address, and insurance. Further paperwork will be required down the track if you choose to proceed with a weight loss surgery assessment.

Meeting with your surgeon

In your first appointment, you will meet our expert surgeon. Think of this consultation as a ‘getting to know you’ session. The surgeon will chat with you about their experience, qualifications, and background, and do all they can to make you feel comfortable throughout the appointment. We appreciate that new clients often feel nervous, and all of our friendly staff are here to ease any anxiety you may have in whatever way we can.

Measurement and examination

A nurse or doctor will take your basic measurements. This may include being weighed on the scales, having your height measured, and some other body measurements being taken. Your abdomen will also be examined. This is usually completed close to the beginning of the appointment to allow the surgeon to recommend the appropriate treatment.

Discussion about your health

It’s important at this stage to have a genuine discussion about obesity and the risks it poses as a chronic disease. This discussion covers why it’s important to treat obesity and the proven treatment options available at Perth Obesity Surgery. This may seem like a difficult topic to talk about openly, but we assure you we treat the subject with the utmost professionalism and respect.

Opportunity to ask questions

Following this discussion, there will be the opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. Our staff will be more than happy to address your concerns and give you any additional information you need.

Open discussion of costs

We like to make sure you have all the information regarding weight-loss surgery you need to make an informed decision. This includes the costs associated with the surgery. At this stage, we go over the price of your surgery, what your insurance will cover, and the payment options available

Invitation to make further appointments

Following the initial consultation, the surgeon will assess whether you are eligible for weight loss surgery. If so, our staff will invite you to make a further appointment to undergo a more thorough assessment to determine the kind of weight loss surgery you may require.
